For those who know who and what de novo was, they understand what Amy Lotsberg, producer of Collected Sounds, meant when she said "If you like your rock with an edge…a beautiful one, you need to check out (de novo)". de novo fans are people who love the band's dynamic song structure and haunting vocals. They formed in early 2003 and broke up (amicably) in 2005, while working on a second album that never materialized. After playing the local Ann Arbor rock scene and performing in such events as the sold out Apollo on Tour show, they put out a much anticipated first album, A Story for All Times, in 2004, which is now available here for you to download in its entirety for free.
Anyone who came to see de novo will tell you they a
lways put on an amazing show with their rich dynamics of thematic hard rock and aggresive stage presence. What made the music so unique was the myriad background the band had- Nick with the instinctual beat of funk and marching band, Scott being classically trained and into electronica, Spencer with his heavy metal, Serene knowing every soft rock hit from the 80's and 90's, and Jon being the radio friendly listener. Unfortunately, as it so often happens, it just didn't work out.
de novo (L-R): Scott Doerrfeld, Spencer Bastian, Nick Kittle, Jon Schultz, Serene Arena
